June 2023

way to set up salad fixings for a small party, Celery Root Salad, Caprese Salad  and Duck A L‘Orange Couscous.

Bernard had interested people sign-up for a tour of Gene Joyner‘s Unbelievable Acres Botanic Gardens on July 25.
About the garden: After graduating from college in 1970, Gene purchased 2-1/2 acres of pasture land in West Palm Beach from his father and began designing and slowly developing his rainforest. He used fast-growing trees to create a wind barrier around the property to protect the cold-sensitive plants. No plant was over 6 feet tall when planted. Over the years Gene made many trips to the rainforests to bring back seeds and plants to be added to the garden. (He had all the proper permits allowing him to import these items), from contacts he made through nurserymen and the Palm Beach Extension Service where he worked as an agent gave him sources to obtain many different species of tropical plants. (from the website www.unbelievableacresbotanicgardens.org).

If you weren‘t at the May meeting, you can come to the June meeting and talk to Bernard about the tour.
Notes from the Spring Plant Sale:
Depending on the weather, rain or shine, we are always thankful for the protection of the tent. Most of all, we are thankful to our friend, Dennis Hessing, who delivers the tent and puts it together for us before the plant sale and also picks it up when all is said and done. Dennis doesn‘t just live around the corner, he drives up from Deerfield Beach on Thursday before the sale and again on Sunday to pick it up and take it home to store for us. He has done this for many, many years and we are so thankful that the Evening Herb Society has such a good friend.

We also owe our thanks to our member and friend Roland Gaudet, who has been providing us with lovely healthy herb plants for our raffle table and who stepped in to help fill out our plant sale table when we were a little short on stock.

This month:
We will enjoy a special botany lesson, something that is usually only provided to the Master Gardener Volunteers, so bring your notebooks and enjoy. Our tasting table topic will be Getting Fruity, and our tea (or punch) will be provided by Donnie Brown.
