February 2023

Your past President is here to thank you for your patience at our January meeting. Our wonderful speaker, Dr. Debra Marcelle-Coney was ill and couldn‘t make it that evening, but she could send us the program Grow Your Own Herb Garden fortunately... of course, we didn‘t have a laptop to receive it, so Mary W., bright creature, went out and got a laptop, and Oh Joy! it worked. Well, she handed me the mike and the machine and, of course, I‘d never used a laptop. But we got through it. (Me, sweating the whole way in fear of messing up!)

You got to see Dr. D‘s own herb garden (her photos). Now go out and grow some tasty plants in the best possible fashion. And thank you for bearing to listen to me. We‘ll have Dr. D. back sometime in the future, but right now she has a Community Garden meeting, open to everyone who wants to bring something from their garden and share it with the group - and learn lots of new gardening news from the members. It‘s the third Saturday of every month at 2 p.m. at the Lantana Public Library on west Lantana Road, between Congress and Military. I go every time and thoroughly enjoy it... Hope to see you all there.

Garden News from the Garden of Well Being/Herb Garden

Some great news from the Mounts. The new garden entrance which is now open has changed dramatically and, finally, the new Information Center/ Gift Shop serves as the way to enter and exit the garden. I took the opportunity today to visit the newly opened center. It’s absolutely beautiful, spacious and the merchandise spoke to me and I bought some stuff. Most of the items are reasonable but others are pricey. There are great choices for all price points. I had a great time.

The Herb Garden is a little slow in its growth due to not much rain. The false Roselle have bloomed out and reseeded and are setting up for another event of beautiful blooms in the summer. The Bromeliad Christmas tree is gone and the new planting around the fountain are different shades of pink, lavender Cosmos. The colors are striking.

When the temperatures dipped into the 40’s, lots of leaves turned brown, shriveled up, or dropped. The rose bushes, however, fared very well.

I do want to mention the Vegetable Garden which I visit after I finish with the grooming of the Herb Garden. There are a lot of interesting plants among the regular veggies we are familiar with. It’s definitely worth a visit.

The garden is very busy with visitors of all ages. The bench in the back of the garden under the Vanilla Vine trellis is a favorite place for photos. The kids squirm when they are having to pose, its a good thing we have digital cameras and we can take lots and lots of photos.

Don’t take my word, come for a visit.
